Getares Old Whaling Station offers an exceptional shore diving experience near Algeciras, combining historical intrigue with excellent underwater exploration. Located at the site of a former whaling operation, this dive spot features a fascinating underwater landscape of concrete structures, pipes, and remnants from the old industrial facility. The shore entry is straightforward from a small rocky beach, making it accessible for divers of all levels. Underwater, you'll discover a maximum depth of around 12 meters with good visibility typically ranging from 8-15 meters. The artificial reef created by the abandoned structures attracts diverse marine life including octopus, moray eels, groupers, and colorful wrasse. Conditions are generally calm with minimal currents, though easterly winds can affect surface conditions. The site works well year-round, with water temperatures ranging from 15°C in winter to 24°C in summer. Best accessed during morning hours when winds are lighter. Parking is available nearby, and the short surface swim makes this an ideal training site or relaxed dive.
