About

Ascidians, commonly known as sea squirts or tunicates, are fascinating filter-feeding creatures that create colorful underwater gardens throughout the Mediterranean. These barrel-shaped or vase-like animals typically appear in vibrant colors ranging from bright orange and red to purple, yellow, and white, often growing in clustered colonies that resemble underwater bouquets. Found from shallow waters down to 40 meters depth, ascidians attach themselves to rocky substrates, cave walls, and artificial structures along the Costa del Sol. They're particularly abundant in shaded areas like underwater caves, overhangs, and the deeper sections of rocky reefs where direct sunlight is limited. When approached, ascidians demonstrate their most entertaining behavior - rapidly contracting and shooting out jets of water when disturbed, earning their "sea squirt" nickname. They feed by filtering plankton and organic particles from the water through their two distinctive siphons. Divers love encountering ascidians because they transform mundane rock faces into spectacular living tapestries. Their brilliant colors provide excellent macro photography opportunities, and observing their sudden water-squirting reactions never fails to amuse underwater explorers. Look for them during morning dives when they're most active and their colors appear most vibrant.
