About

The Comber (Serranus cabrilla) is a striking small grouper that delights Mediterranean divers with its vibrant appearance and curious nature. This compact fish typically measures 15-25cm and displays beautiful orange-red coloration with distinctive blue stripes running along its body and bright blue spots adorning its head and fins. The combination creates an almost jewel-like appearance underwater. Combers are commonly found at depths between 5-40 meters throughout the Mediterranean, making them accessible to divers of all levels along the Costa del Sol. They prefer rocky substrates, caves, and crevices where they can dart in and out of hiding spots. These territorial fish are most active during daylight hours, often seen hovering near their chosen shelter. The best conditions for spotting Combers include calm seas with good visibility, particularly during warmer months when they're more active. Early morning and late afternoon dives often yield the best encounters. Divers love meeting Combers because of their bold, inquisitive personality. Unlike many fish that flee when approached, Combers often remain curious about divers, sometimes even approaching cameras. Their stunning colors photograph beautifully, and their relatively fearless nature makes them perfect subjects for underwater photography enthusiasts exploring Mediterranean reefs.
