Reaching lengths of up to 3 meters, it has a powerful, snake-like body, a broad head, and mottled grey-brown coloration that allows it to blend perfectly into rocky environments. Along the southern Spanish coastline, Conger Eels are regularly encountered on dive sites near Estepona, Casares Coast, Sotogrande, and San Roque. They typically inhabit rocky reefs, caves, and deep crevices between 20 and 100 meters depth, often remaining hidden during daylight hours. Conger Eels are primarily nocturnal hunters. Around Estepona and Sotogrande, they are most often seen during night dives or twilight conditions, when they emerge from their shelters to hunt fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods. During the day, they usually rest deep inside caves or under large rocky overhangs, with only their heads visible from the entrance. The best time to encounter Conger Eels along the Costa del Sol is during calm conditions with good visibility, especially on night dives around Casares and San Roque. Their preferred habitats are areas with complex rocky structures where they can ambush prey from cover. Despite their intimidating size and appearance, European Conger Eels are generally not aggressive toward divers.
