About

The Cuckoo Wrasse is one of the Mediterranean's most captivating reef fish, instantly recognizable by its striking sexual dimorphism. Males display vibrant orange-red bodies with brilliant blue trim along their fins and distinctive blue markings around the head, while females sport a more subdued orange-pink coloration with white bellies and three distinctive black spots along their backs. These territorial fish inhabit rocky reefs and kelp forests throughout the Mediterranean, typically found at depths between 5-40 meters, making them perfect subjects for recreational divers along the Costa del Sol. Cuckoo Wrasse are generally curious and approachable, often allowing divers to observe their fascinating behavior up close. During spring and summer months, particularly from May through August, males become incredibly active as they establish territories and court females with elaborate displays. The best viewing conditions occur on calm, clear days when visibility exceeds 15 meters. Divers cherish encounters with Cuckoo Wrasse because they're photogenic, predictable in their territories, and display remarkable intelligence. Their bold colors create stunning underwater photography opportunities, while their inquisitive nature often leads to memorable face-to-face encounters that highlight the Mediterranean's rich biodiversity.
