About

The Common Cuttlefish is one of the Mediterranean's most captivating creatures, featuring an oval-shaped body with a distinctive internal shell called a cuttlebone. These intelligent cephalopods typically measure 15-25 centimeters and display remarkable camouflage abilities, instantly changing colors and patterns to match their surroundings. Cuttlefish inhabit sandy bottoms, seagrass beds, and rocky areas between 5-100 meters depth throughout the Mediterranean, though they're most commonly encountered at 10-30 meters along the Costa del Sol. During spring and summer months, they move to shallower waters for breeding, making this the prime time for sightings. These mesmerizing creatures exhibit fascinating behavior, from their hypnotic color displays during courtship to their unique backward swimming motion using jet propulsion. When threatened, they can rapidly change from perfectly camouflaged to displaying bold warning patterns, or release dark ink clouds to escape. Divers are often enchanted by cuttlefish encounters along the Costa del Sol, especially around Estepona, Casares Coast, Sotogrande, and San Roque, where these intelligent cephalopods are regularly spotted on local dive sites. Cuttlefish are known for their curiosity and often hover motionless in the water, appearing to observe divers with their large, expressive eyes. Around dive sites in Estepona and Sotogrande, they are commonly found over mixed sandy and rocky seabeds, where they hunt for small fish and crustaceans. The best time to encounter cuttlefish is during early morning or late afternoon dives, when they are most active. Calm sea conditions and good visibility—especially along the Casares and San Roque coastline—greatly increase your chances of spotting them. Their smooth, floating movement and rapid color-changing displays make cuttlefish a favorite for underwater photographers and a memorable highlight of diving in southern Spain.
