About
### 🌈 Doris Tricolor (*Felimare tricolor*) in the Costa del Sol – Where to See This Colorful Nudibranch Near Estepona & Sotogrande The Doris Tricolor (*Felimare tricolor*) is one of the most visually striking nudibranchs in the Mediterranean, often described as a “living jewel” of the sea. This tiny sea slug, typically 2–4 cm long, displays vivid bands of yellow or orange with electric blue edges and white spotting, creating a dramatic contrast against the rocky seabed. Along the Costa del Sol, Doris Tricolor can be found on dive sites around Estepona, Casares Coast, Sotogrande, and San Roque. They typically inhabit rocky reefs, vertical walls, cave entrances, and shaded overhangs where sponge growth is abundant. This nudibranch feeds primarily on sponges, which is why it is most often found in sponge-rich habitats between 5 and 40 meters depth. Around Estepona and Sotogrande, divers commonly spot them crawling slowly across rock faces or tucked into small crevices on reef walls. The best time to encounter Doris Tricolor along the Costa del Sol is during calm conditions with good visibility, especially in spring and autumn when water temperatures are ideal and marine activity increases. Early morning and late afternoon dives around Casares and San Roque often provide the best chances of spotting them. For divers and underwater photographers, Doris Tricolor is a true highlight. Its vivid coloration and slow movement make it perfect for macro photography, while its presence is also a strong indicator of a healthy, biodiverse reef system. Whether you’re diving near Sotogrande or exploring rocky reefs around Estepona, encountering a Doris Tricolor is always a special moment and a reminder of the incredible hidden color of Mediterranean marine life.
