About

The European Flounder is one of the Mediterranean's most fascinating flatfish, perfectly showcasing nature's incredible adaptability. These masters of camouflage have both eyes positioned on their upper side, typically the right, with their flattened brown-olive body reaching up to 50 centimeters in length. What makes flounders truly remarkable is their ability to change color and pattern within seconds to match the sandy or muddy seabed beneath them. In the Mediterranean waters off Costa del Sol, flounders inhabit depths from shallow coastal areas down to 100 meters, preferring soft sandy or muddy bottoms near rocky reefs. They're most active during dawn and dusk, making early morning or late afternoon dives ideal for encounters. During daylight hours, they often bury themselves in sediment with only their eyes protruding. Divers are captivated by flounders for several reasons: their incredible camouflage abilities provide a thrilling hide-and-seek challenge, their unique swimming style resembles underwater flying, and observing their lightning-fast color transformations is truly mesmerizing. Patient divers who move slowly near sandy areas between rocks are most likely to spot these extraordinary fish, making every sighting feel like discovering a hidden treasure.
