Giant Doris

nudibranch

About

The Giant Doris (Hypselodoris picta) is one of the Mediterranean's most spectacular nudibranch species, making it a coveted find for underwater photographers and macro enthusiasts diving the Costa del Sol. This vibrant sea slug displays stunning purple, blue, and orange coloration with intricate patterns that seem almost hand-painted across its translucent body. Growing up to 6 centimeters in length, it's considerably larger than most Mediterranean nudibranchs. You'll typically encounter Giant Doris on rocky walls, overhangs, and cave entrances between 15-40 meters depth, where they feed on colorful sponges. These graceful creatures move slowly across surfaces, their feathery gill plumes creating an ethereal underwater ballet. Their cerata (finger-like projections) sway gently with the current, adding to their mesmerizing appearance. The best conditions for spotting Giant Doris include calm seas with good visibility during spring and summer months when they're most active. Early morning dives often yield the best results as they tend to be more exposed during feeding periods. Divers cherish encountering these living jewels because they represent the Mediterranean's incredible biodiversity and offer unparalleled macro photography opportunities, remaining relatively still for close-up shots.
