About

The Atlantic mackerel is a sleek, torpedo-shaped fish that captivates Mediterranean divers with its distinctive metallic blue-green back adorned with striking dark zigzag stripes. These streamlined predators typically measure 30-50 centimeters and possess a silvery-white belly that creates beautiful contrast underwater. Mackerel are highly social creatures, forming impressive schools that can number in the hundreds or even thousands. They're fast swimmers, constantly on the move as they hunt for small fish, squid, and plankton. In the Mediterranean, you'll encounter them from surface waters down to about 200 meters depth, though they're most commonly spotted between 10-50 meters along the Costa del Sol. The best conditions for mackerel encounters are during spring and summer months when water temperatures rise above 16°C. They prefer areas with good current flow near underwater structures, drop-offs, and areas where cooler deeper water meets warmer surface layers. Divers absolutely love encountering mackerel schools because of their mesmerizing synchronized swimming patterns. These shimmering walls of fish create spectacular underwater displays, with the entire school moving as one entity, twisting and turning in perfect harmony. Their metallic sheen catches available light beautifully, creating unforgettable photographic opportunities.
