Marbled Electric Ray
About
⚡ Marbled Electric Ray in the Costa del Sol – Where to See Them Near Estepona & Sotogrande The Marbled Electric Ray is one of the Mediterranean’s most fascinating species, easily recognized by its rounded disc shape and beautiful marbled patterns in shades of brown and cream. Growing up to 60 cm, this unique ray is capable of generating electric shocks (up to 200 volts) to defend itself and stun prey. Along the Costa del Sol, Marbled Electric Rays can be encountered on sandy dive sites near Estepona, Casares Coast, Sotogrande, and San Roque. They prefer sandy or muddy seabeds, often close to rocky reefs, where they can bury themselves almost completely, leaving only their eyes visible. Although they can be found from shallow waters to great depths, divers most commonly spot them between 15 and 50 meters in this region. Around dive sites in Estepona and Sotogrande, they are often hidden in plain sight on sandy bottoms, making them an exciting find for attentive divers. The best time to encounter Marbled Electric Rays along the Costa del Sol is during early morning or night dives, when they are more active and moving across the seabed. Calm conditions and good visibility—especially around sandy areas near reef structures in Casares and San Roque—increase your chances of spotting them. Despite their ability to produce electric shocks, these rays are generally calm and non-aggressive. Divers should simply avoid touching them and maintain a respectful distance. Their slow, graceful swimming and intricate patterns make them a fascinating subject for underwater observation and photography. For many divers, seeing a Marbled Electric Ray is a highlight of diving in southern Spain. It offers a rare glimpse into the Mediterranean’s electric marine life and adds an element of discovery to any dive along the Costa del Sol.
