### 🐟 Mediterranean Rainbow Wrasse in the Costa del Sol – Where to See Them Near Estepona & Sotogrande The Mediterranean Rainbow Wrasse (*Coris julis*) is one of the most colorful and active reef fish encountered by divers along the Costa del Sol. This species is especially fascinating due to its strong sexual dimorphism: males display vivid orange-red bodies with a striking blue zigzag stripe running from the eye to the tail, while females and juveniles show more subtle brown tones with white and dark spotted patterns. Along the southern Spanish coastline, Rainbow Wrasse are commonly seen on dive sites around Estepona, Casares Coast, Sotogrande, and San Roque. They inhabit rocky reefs, mixed seabeds, and Posidonia seagrass meadows, typically between 5 and 30 meters depth for recreational diving. These energetic fish are highly active and territorial, constantly darting between rocks, algae patches, and seagrass beds in search of small crustaceans, worms, and mollusks. Around Estepona and Sotogrande, they are often seen patrolling their territory or quickly disappearing into crevices before reappearing moments later. The best time to observe Mediterranean Rainbow Wrasse along the Costa del Sol is during calm, clear conditions with good visibility, particularly in spring through autumn. Early morning and late afternoon dives—especially around Casares and San Roque—offer the most active and photogenic encounters. For divers, this species is a constant source of movement and color.
