About

The Salema (Sarpa salpa) is one of the Mediterranean's most recognizable fish, delighting divers with its distinctive appearance and fascinating behavior. This oval-shaped fish displays a silvery-blue body adorned with striking golden-yellow horizontal stripes running from head to tail, making it unmistakable underwater. Salemas are highly social creatures, typically found in large schools that create spectacular underwater displays as they move in synchronized formations across rocky reefs and seagrass beds. These herbivorous fish are primarily grazers, often seen methodically feeding on algae and marine vegetation. In the Mediterranean waters around Costa del Sol, Salemas inhabit depths ranging from shallow waters just below the surface down to 70 meters, though they're most commonly encountered between 5-30 meters. Rocky bottoms, Posidonia seagrass meadows, and reef edges are their preferred habitats. The best conditions for spotting Salemas include calm, clear water with good visibility during daylight hours when they're most active. Divers love encountering these fish because their large schools create mesmerizing underwater spectacles, and their curious nature often allows for close observation. Their predictable presence makes them reliable subjects for underwater photography and a guaranteed highlight of Mediterranean dives.
