About

⭐ Sea Stars in the Costa del Sol – Where to Spot Them Near Estepona & Sotogrande The Mediterranean Sea is home to several fascinating sea star species that delight divers exploring the Costa del Sol. The most commonly encountered species is the red sea star (Echinaster sepositus), known for its vibrant orange to deep red color and slightly rough, granular texture. It typically grows to around 15–20 cm across its five arms. Along the coastline of southern Spain, sea stars are regularly spotted on dive sites around Estepona, Casares Coast, Sotogrande, and San Roque. They inhabit rocky reefs, seagrass meadows, and reef structures, from shallow waters down to depths of 200 meters—although most divers will find them between 5 and 30 meters. Sea stars move slowly using hundreds of tiny tube feet and are often seen resting on rocks or partially hidden under ledges during the day. Around dive sites in Estepona and Sotogrande, they are commonly found near rocky outcrops or within Posidonia seagrass beds, where they blend surprisingly well with their surroundings. The best time to observe sea stars along the Costa del Sol is during early morning or evening dives, when they become more active and emerge to feed. They primarily feed on mollusks, sponges, and organic matter, and calm conditions with good visibility—especially along the Casares and San Roque coastline—offer the best chances of spotting them. For divers and underwater photographers, sea stars are always a highlight. Their bright colors stand out against the Mediterranean seabed, and their unique feeding behavior—slowly enveloping prey—offers fascinating moments to observe. They are also a great example of the biodiversity that makes diving in Estepona and Sotogrande so rewarding. Whether you’re on a beginner dive or exploring deeper reefs, encountering a Mediterranean sea star adds a special touch to any Costa del Sol diving experience.
