Seahorses are among the Mediterranean's most enchanting underwater treasures, captivating Costa del Sol divers with their mythical appearance and unique behavior. These remarkable fish feature elongated snouts, prehensile tails, and distinctive bony plates covering their bodies, with colors ranging from yellow and orange to brown and green, perfectly camouflaged among seagrass and algae. Two species inhabit Mediterranean waters: the long-snouted seahorse and the short-snouted seahorse. They typically inhabit shallow coastal waters between 1-20 meters depth, preferring seagrass meadows, rocky reefs with algae, and areas with gentle currents. Their famous upright swimming style and ability to grasp vegetation with their tails make them masters of disguise. Divers have the best chance of spotting these elusive creatures during calm conditions with good visibility, particularly in protected bays around Marbella and Nerja. Early morning or late afternoon dives often yield better results when seahorses are more active feeding on small crustaceans and plankton. What makes seahorse encounters truly special is their curious nature and unhurried movements. These gentle creatures often allow close observation, creating magical underwater moments that divers treasure long after surfacing.
