About

The Small Red Scorpionfish (Scorpaena notata) is a captivating Mediterranean resident that delights scuba divers with its masterful camouflage abilities. This compact predator typically measures 15-25 centimeters and displays a mottled reddish-brown coloration with intricate patterns that perfectly mimic rocky surfaces and algae-covered substrates. These ambush hunters remain motionless for extended periods, blending seamlessly with their surroundings until unsuspecting prey ventures too close. Their large, fan-like pectoral fins and bulging eyes give them an almost comical appearance that contrasts with their deadly hunting prowess. In the Mediterranean, Small Red Scorpionfish inhabit rocky bottoms, crevices, and seagrass beds from shallow waters down to 200 meters depth. Along Costa del Sol dive sites, they're commonly encountered between 5-30 meters, particularly around rocky reefs and artificial structures. The best spotting conditions occur during calm weather with good visibility, especially during dawn or dusk when they're more active. Night dives offer exceptional opportunities as their red coloration becomes more pronounced under artificial lighting. Divers treasure these encounters because spotting a perfectly camouflaged scorpionfish tests observation skills and provides incredible photographic opportunities. Their seemingly grumpy expressions and statue-like poses create memorable underwater moments that showcase the Mediterranean's remarkable biodiversity.
