Sole
About
The Common Sole is one of the Mediterranean's most fascinating flatfish, perfectly adapted for life on sandy and muddy bottoms along the Costa del Sol. This remarkable fish features an oval, flattened brown body that can reach up to 60 centimeters, with both eyes positioned on its right side and exceptional camouflage abilities that make it blend seamlessly with the seabed. Sole are primarily nocturnal creatures, spending daylight hours buried in sand with only their eyes protruding. They inhabit depths from shallow coastal waters down to 200 meters, though divers most commonly encounter them between 5-30 meters on sandy bottoms near seagrass beds and rocky reef edges. The best conditions for spotting sole include night dives or late evening twilight dives when they emerge to hunt for worms, small crustaceans, and mollusks. Early morning dives can also be productive as they return to their sandy hideouts. Divers cherish sole encounters for their incredible camouflage demonstrations and the challenge of spotting these masters of disguise. Watching a sole gracefully glide across the bottom with its characteristic undulating motion, then suddenly disappear into the sand, provides one of the Mediterranean's most magical underwater moments.
