Sponges
About
Sponges are among the Mediterranean's most diverse and colorful marine inhabitants, creating vibrant underwater gardens that captivate Costa del Sol divers. These ancient filter-feeders display an incredible variety of forms, from encrusting orange and yellow patches covering rocky surfaces to towering barrel-shaped structures reaching up to 50 centimeters tall. Mediterranean sponges showcase brilliant colors including bright oranges, deep purples, vivid yellows, and striking reds that illuminate darker dive sites. Found throughout the Mediterranean from shallow waters at 5 meters down to depths exceeding 40 meters, sponges thrive on rocky substrates, cave walls, and overhangs where currents deliver their planktonic food. The famous bath sponge and colorful encrusting species are particularly abundant along the Costa del Sol's rocky coastlines and underwater cliffs. Divers love encountering sponge communities because they create living rainbows underwater, especially when illuminated by dive lights. These stationary animals serve as bustling apartment complexes for small fish, crustaceans, and other marine life. Best spotted during dives with good visibility on rocky walls and in underwater caves, sponge gardens offer endless photographic opportunities and demonstrate the Mediterranean's remarkable biodiversity in spectacular living color.
