Tompot Blenny

fish

About

The Tompot Blenny is one of the Mediterranean's most charismatic small fish, instantly recognizable by its distinctive feathery eyebrow-like tentacles above each eye and expressive face. Growing up to 30 centimeters long, this mottled brown and cream fish has a distinctly grumpy expression that never fails to amuse divers. These curious creatures inhabit rocky reefs, caves, and crevices throughout the Mediterranean, typically found between 5 and 40 meters depth along the Costa del Sol. Tompot Blennies are territorial homebodies, often seen poking their heads out of holes in the rocks, ready to dart back to safety at the first sign of danger. The best conditions for spotting them are during calm, clear water days when diving slowly around rocky outcrops and underwater walls. Early morning or late afternoon dives often yield better encounters when they're more active. Divers adore Tompot Blennies for their engaging personalities and photogenic qualities. They're surprisingly curious, sometimes approaching divers who remain still and patient. Their comical expressions and bold behavior make them perfect subjects for underwater photography, creating memorable encounters that highlight the Mediterranean's incredible biodiversity.
