Cerianthus membranaceus
About
### đș Tube Anemone (*Cerianthus membranaceus*) in the Costa del Sol â Where to See This Hidden Reef Dweller Near Estepona & Sotogrande The Tube Anemone (*Cerianthus membranaceus*), a member of the Cerianthidae family, is one of the Mediterraneanâs most elegant and easily overlooked invertebrates. At first glance it looks like a delicate underwater flower, but it is in fact a soft-bodied anemone that lives inside a long, self-made tube buried in sediment. This species is occasionally encountered by divers along the Costa del Sol, including dive sites near Estepona, Casares Coast, Sotogrande, and San Roque. It is typically found on soft sandy or muddy seabeds close to rocky reefs, where it anchors its buried tube for protection. The Tube Anemone extends a striking crown of long, flowing tentacles above the seafloor to capture plankton and small particles drifting in the water column. These tentacles can be vividly coloredâranging from purples and greens to soft browns and whitesâand retract instantly into the tube if disturbed. Around Estepona and Sotogrande, divers are most likely to spot them partially buried in sand near reef edges, seagrass beds, or gentle slopes between 10 and 40 meters depth. They are often more visible in areas with light current, which helps bring food particles within reach of their extended tentacles. The best time to observe Tube Anemones along the Costa del Sol is during calm conditions with good visibility, especially on relaxed dives where the seabed can be carefully explored. Early morning or late afternoon dives often provide the best lighting to appreciate their full coloration and movement. For divers and underwater photographers, *Cerianthus membranaceus* is a subtle but beautiful subject. Its slow, graceful motion and flower-like appearance make it a perfect example of the hidden biodiversity found in Mediterranean soft-bottom habitats. Whether youâre diving near Sotogrande or exploring sandy patches around Estepona, encountering a Tube Anemone is a quiet but memorable highlight of Costa del Sol diving.
