About

The Two-Banded Sea Bream (Diplodus vulgaris) is a stunning Mediterranean fish that captivates divers with its distinctive silver body adorned with two prominent dark vertical bands - one behind the head and another near the tail fin. Growing up to 45 centimeters, this elegant fish displays beautiful golden-yellow fins that shimmer in underwater light. These gregarious fish typically form small schools around rocky reefs, seagrass beds, and sandy bottoms between 5 to 40 meters depth along the Costa del Sol. They're particularly abundant in areas where rocks meet sand, actively foraging for small crustaceans, worms, and algae during daylight hours. The best conditions to spot Two-Banded Sea Bream are during calm, clear water days with good visibility. Early morning and late afternoon dives often yield the most sightings when they're most active. Look for them around Nerja's rocky formations or the artificial reefs near Marbella. Divers cherish encounters with these charismatic fish because they're relatively approachable and photogenic, often allowing close observation of their feeding behavior. Their curious nature and beautiful markings make them perfect subjects for underwater photography, while their presence indicates healthy Mediterranean marine ecosystems.
