Undulate Ray

The Undulate Ray is one of the Mediterranean's most spectacular cartilaginous encounters, instantly recognizable by its distinctive wavy pattern of dark lines across its brownish upper surface that give this species its name. Growing up to 1.5 meters in length, these graceful rays have a diamond-shaped disc and a relatively short tail compared to other ray species. These bottom-dwellers prefer sandy and muddy substrates where they partially bury themselves, making them masters of camouflage. In Costa del Sol waters, Undulate Rays are typically found between 10-50 meters depth, favoring areas with mixed sand and rock formations near the continental shelf. Undulate Rays are generally docile creatures that glide effortlessly across the seafloor when disturbed, creating an almost ethereal underwater ballet. They're most active during dawn and dusk hours when hunting for mollusks, crustaceans, and small fish. Divers treasure encounters with Undulate Rays because of their impressive size, unique patterning, and surprisingly tolerant nature around respectful observers. The best conditions for spotting them include calm seas with good visibility, particularly during early morning or late afternoon dives when they're most active. Their rarity makes each sighting a memorable highlight of any Mediterranean dive.
