Scuba Diving in December
on the Costa del Sol
Mild winter. 12–17°C air. Festive atmosphere on shore. Short days but the diving rewards are real.
December diving on the Costa del Sol is a gift — literally. We see couples giving each other dive experiences for Christmas, families booking intro dives during the holiday break, and experienced divers escaping the northern European winter for Mediterranean adventures. Water temperature drops to 15–17°C, requiring a 7mm wetsuit, but the trade-off is spectacular: nudibranch diversity peaks, cuttlefish are plentiful, and the winter clarity can produce visibility over 18m. December is when the Costa del Sol feels most authentic — no tourist veneer, just genuine local life and a sea that rewards those who dare to enter. Our Christmas and New Year dive slots are special occasions — we've had champagne toasts on the boat at sunset. It's not just diving, it's an experience.
What to Expect in December
Winter arrives gently. Air is 12–17°C, water 15–17°C. A 7mm wetsuit with hood and gloves is essential. Visibility is often excellent — cold, clear water with minimal plankton. Days are short (sunset ~5:30pm) so morning dives are preferred. Weather can bring occasional storms but calm spells between are divine. December is quiet — book a few days ahead and you'll be fine. Christmas/New Year slots do sell out — book those early.
